In the past, translation was always done entirely by humans. CAT should not be confused with machine translation!
Whereas machine translation is a fully automated process that often produces mechanical-sounding results, CAT tools are designed to improve the efficiency of the translation process by aiding human translators in the tasks that can be slow and repetitive. By compiling databases of terminology in source and target languages, automatically propagating exact repetitions of text in the source language, and searching existing translation databases, CAT tools can make the translator’s job faster without eliminating the human control that makes a good translation feel natural.
CAT Tools for Speed and Consistency
- Bitext aligners, which identify corresponding segments of text in source and target languages, and then learn how to translate those segments in the future
